Meet the maker

Hi there! I’m Marije, the founder and maker behind Barks and Braids. I’m 21 years old and live in a small village near Rotterdam with my boyfriend and our Bernese Mountain Dog, Mia (the inspiration behind everything I create).

Growing up, I’ve always had a deep love for dogs. I dreamed of having one of my own, but because of my dad’s allergies, that dream had to wait. Fast forward to a couple of years ago, when Mia came into our lives, everything changed. She’s my first dog, and honestly, the best companion I could’ve ever hoped for.

As a young professional, I spend my days balancing work, creativity, and lots of dog cuddles. I love being outdoors, going on hikes, exploring nature trails, and of course, bringing Mia along for every adventure. I’m also a huge food lover, whether it’s cooking at home or finding new places to eat (bonus points if they’re dog-friendly!).

When we first got Mia, I wanted gear that was strong, functional and beautiful, something that could handle a big, adventurous dog like her, but still look good doing it. I started experimenting with paracord, and over time, I fell in love with the craft. After lots of learning, testing, and braiding, Barks and Braids was born.

Today, I handcraft every product using durable paracord and waterproof Biothane, materials I trust for their strength and sustainability. My focus is on creating high-quality dogwear specifically for large breeds, because our gentle giants deserve gear that’s as bold and dependable as they are.
